The former Indian captain, Rahul Dravid, has said that Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the best man to lead the Indian team at the moment and there is no need to replace him as captain in the near future. The performance of the Indian team hasn’t been that good in the recent times in any of the three formats of the game. Because of that, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is being criticized a lot and many former cricketers have said that this is the time for somebody else to take over the captaincy from MS Dhoni. But, Dravid doesn’t think so.
When asked whether Dhoni should be replaced as captain, Dravid said, “I don’t think it would be the best thing for Indian cricket. He has not done a bad job as a captain. Yes, we have lost a few series recently, but, there are other reasons of those defeats. Captaincy is not an issue at the moment. He is leading the team pretty well.”
“Under his captaincy, we won the T20 world cup. Then, we went on to win the ODI World Cup after 28 years. We also became no. 1 in the tests under his captaincy. So, his leadership qualities can’t be questioned.”
“We don’t have too many options at the moment as far as the captaincy is concerned. Gautam Gambhir and Sehwag have been struggling with form since quite a while. So, it wouldn’t be sensible to hand over the captaincy to them.”
“Virat Kohli might be an option, but, he is too young at the moment. He should be groomed for a year or so and then, he should be given that role. He is a great, young talent and we shouldn’t put him under pressure by making him captain now.”

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has often been branded as a lucky captain, who shines more because of luck than because of his tactics on the field and this has been a major criticism for the boy from Ranchi for the last five years and this was almost proved, to some extent in the final round of matches during the ongoing Indian Premier League. Dhoni and his team, the two time defending champions Chennai Super Kings had ended their allotted 16 matches in the group stages with a defeat and were stranded on 17 points, occupying the final playoff spot by virtue of a better net run rate over the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
If Dhoni and his boys were to stand any chance of making the playoffs, it would mean that the Royal Challengers Bangalore had to lose in their final match against the Kings XI Punjab which was almost unthinkable with the kind of form that they were in. the match didn’t start off well for either the Kings or for Mahendra Singh Dhoni when they were bundled out for 132 and with his team needing just 133 runs to secure the final playoff berth, Chris Gayle began to his sixes for fun.
But soon after, Gayle was out and there was almost a collapse for the Royal Challengers and it seemed that fortune was again smiling on Dhoni when the Kings XI Punjab managed to hold out and beat the Garden City team. It was unprecedented the way the Super Kings managed to reach the playoffs and now that they have, they have the chance of winning the title for the third time in as many seasons if they win the next three matches.
And one often wonders why people call Mahendra Singh Dhoni a lucky captain, but after this, no one will ever doubt his luck.
