The Indian batsmen scored some runs in their first practice match on the Australia tour against the Cricket Australia XI, but, that shouldn’t be seen as a big positive. Firstly because the attack that they were facing was composed of young, inexperienced blokes who are just coming out of junior cricket and secondly, because the pitch was flat and not had as much bounce as the normal Australian pitches have. There is no way that the Indians are going to counter the same conditions in Brisbane next week.

Yes, a bit of time in the middle for the visiting players is always valuable, but, the captain and the team management should not give too much importance to the runs scored by the players in this game.

In Brisbane where the first test match is to be played, the Indians will have to cope with the likes of Harris and Johnson and that will be a different ball game.

There are two or three places up for grabs in the Indian batting line up presently. The first one is right at the top of the order. Shikhar Dhawan has kept his place in the side despite his failures in England, but, should he be given a go at Gabba knowing the fact that he is vulnerable to short balls? Wouldn’t it be a better option to present the young KL Rahul his first test cap?

Yes, some would say that Rahul is untested at this level, but, he is someone who, in the domestic cricket in India, has shown that he can play on the back foot and that’s what a captain needs from his openers down under.

It remains to be seen though which way Virat kohli, the stand in captain of India for the first match, is thinking.

Hilfenhaus to sit out playing XI

It doesn’t seem Ben Hilfenhaus will be able to make Australia’s playing XI for the first test match against Pakistan which is starting this Tuesday in Dubai.

The 31-year old swing bowler from Tasmania did not get to bowl too much in the practice match against the A team of Pakistan. He, in fact, did not bowl at all in the second innings which is a clear hint that that the team management doesn’t see him as one of the first choice players for the series.

Hilfenhaus’ selection in the squad itself for this UAE tour was a big surprise as he had not played test match cricket for a long time and had not left too much of an impression in the last domestic season either. But, perhaps, because of his ability of reverse swing the ball on sluggish pitches, the Aussie selectors included him in the touring party.

The pitches in Emirates generally happen to be dusty ones because of which the ball gets roughened up quite quickly and starts tailing in the direction opposite to the conventional swing and Hilfenhaus’ low arm action helps him to make it happen more efficiently than the other bowlers.

But, with the Dubai pitch also expected to turn big from the 3rd day onwards, Australia has to go with two spinners and that leaves the room for only two quickies in the XI. Mitchell Johnson is the obvious pick for one of those spots and considering Peter Siddle’s consistency over the years, the other spot is expected to go to him. So, Hilfenhaus might have to sit out.

The last time that Hilfenhaus had played in white clothes for Australia was in December 2012. That was a home game for the Kangaroos against Sri Lanka.
